The Maeght couple

The foundation was born out of the friendship of Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite, leading publishers and art dealers in post-war Europe, with some of the most important artists of the 20th century such as Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall and many others.

This visionary couple organized legendary exhibitions such as the first surrealist exhibition in 1947 around André Breton and Marcel Duchamp in their Parisian gallery.

In 1964, the Foundation was inaugurated by André Malraux

The first private foundation dedicated to art in France, the Foundation was inspired by American models, such as Guggenheim's or the Barnes and Phillips collections, discovered by the Maeght family during their travels to the United States in the 1950s.
