The shell collection
The Musée des Coquillages houses an impressive collection of over 7,000 shell specimens from all over the world.
From the smallest to the largest, from the most common to the rarest, you'll discover an incredible variety of shapes, colors and textures.
Among these marine treasures, you'll have the chance to admire over 400 world-record shells.
Each visit to the museum offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the diversity and beauty of marine life.
The creation of the museum
The Musée de Coquillages de Saint Jean Cap Ferrat was founded in 1957 by Mr. and Mrs. Allais, a couple passionate about marine life. Since then, the collection has been enriched with thousands of shells, many of which are rare and precious. The museum has become one of the most important museums of its kind in the world, attracting visitors from all over the world.
The visit
The visit to the shell museum begins with a 6-minute mini-film.
Then walk the 33 aisles of the museum filled with all kinds of shells: from giant ones weighing several kilos to smaller ones, freshwater and land-based... The shells are presented in well-lit display cases.
Discover also exhibits on marine biology and on how shellfish are collected and studied.
On the GuidiGo app, families can take a free, interactive tour.

Workshops for children
Several activities are offered on site.
The shell museum organizes workshops for children and adults, where you can learn to draw, paint or create shell jewelry.
Museum opening hours
Free admission to Quai Lindbergh.
Open in July and August:
- Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 7pm
- Sunday, 10am to 1pm
The museum is closed on Friday July 14th and Tuesday August 15th.
