Matisse Exhibition
With the Great American Nudes series of the 1960s, Tom Wesselmann transformed the Matissian odalisque into a pop icon.

The exhibition Tom Wesselmann. After Matisse runs from February 24 to May 29, 2023.
For Tom Wesselmann, the work of Matisse remains a central reference in his search for visual efficiency and image saturation.

The Tom Wesselmann exhibition "After Matisse" traces this admiration for Matisse through 41 works.

The Matisse exhibition demonstrates the various ways in which Wesselmann appropriates Matisse's work.
The exhibition explores Wesselmann's elaborate technique of collage or volume drawing.
This Matisse exhibition features works of varying scales, from small formats to large-scale works.
It brings together four significant groups that reflect the dialogue between the two artists: the collages, the Great American Nudes, the Steel Drawings, and the Sunset Nudes.

Tom Wesselmann and his links with Henri Matisse

Tom Wesselmann was a popular American artist in the 1960s who became associated with the pop art movement.
He was best known for his collages and paintings that used images from American popular culture, such as advertisements, household objects and female nudes.
He has often been compared to Henri Matisse because of the use of bright colors and simplified forms in his work.

Henri Matisse was a French artist who worked during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
He is famous for his paintings, sculptures and drawings, which have often been considered part of the Fauvist movement.
Matisse was also known for his use of bright colors and simplified forms in his work, especially in his nude and still life paintings.

Tom Wesselmann's "After Matisse" exhibition explores the connections between these two artists and examines how Matisse's work influenced Wesselmann's work.
