The history of the Iron Mask dates back to the 17th century, when Louis XIV ruled France.
According to legend, an unknown prisoner wearing an iron mask was imprisoned on theSainte-Marguerite Islandin 1687.
No one knew who he was or why he was there. Even the governor of the island did not know his name.
The mysterious prisoner spent more than 10 years on the island, under the guard of 100 soldiers. There are several theories about the identity of the man in the iron mask.
Some believe that he was the twin brother of Louis XIV. Others claim that he was a member of the royal family secretly imprisoned to protect the throne.
Despite theories, the identity of the prisoner remains unknown. In 1698 he was transferred to the Bastille prison, where he died in 1703.
The iron mask was removed after his death, but his identity was kept secret. Even today, the mystery remains!
